Digital Security for Journalists

In an era of increasing digital surveillance and cyber threats, protecting sources and information has become crucial for journalism integrity. CMR Nepal Journalism Academy, in partnership with Interlink Academy, Germany, offers a comprehensive digital security training designed specifically for experienced Nepali journalists.

This intensive course combines theoretical knowledge with practical security measures, providing you with the essential skills to protect yourself, your sources, and your stories in the digital landscape. Whether you’re investigating sensitive topics, communicating with whistleblowers, or storing confidential information, you’ll learn to navigate digital risks while maintaining journalistic excellence.

Course Curriculum

Our curriculum covers the complete digital security ecosystem for journalists, from basic cybersecurity to advanced protection techniques. You’ll learn what digital security is, why it’s essential for modern journalism, and develop the practical skills needed to safeguard your work and sources.

The training will cover the following key areas:

  • Risk Assessment – Understanding and evaluating digital threats
  • Device Security – Protecting computers, mobile phones, and other equipment
  • Internet Security – Safe browsing and online research practices
  • Privacy Protection – Maintaining confidentiality in digital communications
  • Email and Communication Security – Securing correspondence and source communications
  • Password Management – Creating and maintaining strong authentication systems
  • Social Media Security – Protecting personal and professional online presence
  • Data Security – Safeguarding sensitive information and files
  • Additional Security Measures – Advanced protection techniques for high-risk situations

Course Structure

Our unique program features a streamlined approach designed for working journalists. The training consists of an intensive six-day face-to-face session in Kathmandu, followed by a seven-week online phase. This structure allows you to implement security measures in real-world situations while maintaining your current work commitments.

  • First attendance phase: 6 days, 9am to 5pm, for learning fundamental digital security and privacy protection
  • E-Learning phase: 7 weeks, 6-8 hours a week commitment to implement security protocols at the workplace

Certificates will be awarded only to participants who attend all training days and complete the online coursework.

Fellowships for Selected Journalists

This course is completely free for selected participants through Interlink Academy fellowships. All selected participants will receive full scholarships that cover course fees, training materials, meals during attendance phases, and for participants from outside Kathmandu Valley, travel and accommodation expenses are also covered by the Academy.

Course Participants

This fundamental course is ideal for mid-career Nepali journalists with at least three years of experience. No prior digital security experience is required – this training is designed for professionals who have little to no background in digital security but are ready to strengthen their digital protection capabilities.
