Factchecking and Verification

In today’s information ecosystem, distinguishing truth from misinformation has become essential for maintaining journalistic integrity. CMR Nepal Journalism Academy, in partnership with Interlink Academy, Germany, and the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), offers a comprehensive fact-checking training designed specifically for experienced Nepali journalists and aspiring fact-checkers.

This intensive course combines theoretical knowledge with practical verification techniques, providing you with the essential skills to combat misinformation and uphold truth in journalism. Whether you’re verifying breaking news, investigating viral content, or building systematic fact-checking processes, you’ll learn to navigate the complex landscape of information verification while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy.

Course Curriculum

Our curriculum covers the complete fact-checking ecosystem, from basic verification principles to advanced digital forensics. You’ll learn what fact-checking is, develop source evaluation skills, and master the tools and techniques needed to identify and counter misinformation effectively.

The training will cover the following comprehensive areas:

  • Understanding Fact-Checking – Fundamental principles and importance in modern journalism
  • Source Identification and Evaluation – Recognizing credible sources and assessing reliability
  • Fact-Checking Processes – Systematic approaches to verification
  • Research Methods for Facts – Techniques for thorough investigation and verification
  • Photo and Video Fact-Checking – Visual content verification techniques
  • Identifying Misleading Images and Videos – Recognizing manipulated or false visual content
  • Digital Forensic Tools – Advanced technology for content verification
  • Identifying and Addressing Misinformation – Recognizing false information patterns and solutions
  • Source Verification Methods – Techniques for confirming authenticity of information sources
  • IFCN Code of Ethics – International standards for fact-checking practice
  • Fact-Checking Writing Format – Professional standards for presenting verified information

Course Structure

Our unique program features a blended learning approach designed for working journalists. The training consists of two intensive six-day face-to-face sessions in Kathmandu, connected by a flexible six-week e-learning phase. This structure allows you to apply verification skills in real-world situations while maintaining your current work commitments.

  • First attendance phase: 6 days, 9am to 5pm, for learning fundamental fact-checking principles and techniques
  • E-Learning phase: 6 weeks, 6-8 hours a week commitment to apply newly learned skills at the workplace
  • Second attendance phase: 6 days, 9am to 5pm, for advanced verification techniques and certification completion

Certificates will be awarded only to participants who attend all training days and complete the online coursework.

Fellowships for Selected Journalists

This course is completely free for selected participants through fellowships provided by Interlink Academy. All selected participants will receive full scholarships that cover course fees, training materials, meals during attendance phases, and for participants from outside Kathmandu Valley, travel and accommodation expenses are also covered by the Academy.

Course Participants

This fundamental course is ideal for mid-career Nepali journalists with at least three years of experience or individuals aspiring to become fact-checkers. No prior fact-checking experience is required – this training is designed for professionals who have little to no background in fact-checking but are ready to strengthen their verification capabilities.
